Whether it’s your first time on the river or a seasonaire, below you’ll find everything from routes and booking, to what to bring – making your visit even more enjoyable.

  • Can I just turn up or do I need to book in advance?
    Yes, you can simply turn up without a booking, although it’s wise to book online in advance, especially on weekends and during school holidays. On some busy days we may also operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • How much does Cambridge punting cost?
    Pricing vary depending on your experience. Granta Mooring’s rates are very competitive, plus we’re in the very best location. We also provide extra discounts for schools, locals and Boatclub members.
  • Can I try punting myself?
    Absolutely! Granta Moorings offers self-hire punts and canoes, allowing you to navigate the river at your own pace. Rates are charged on an hourly basis, with quarterly pro-rata charging. An ID deposit will be required before departure.
  • How long are the river tours?
    Guided tours last approximately 50 to 60 minutes. Self-hire sessions are bookable from one hour.
  • How many people can we take on a self-hire punt?
    For your safety, we stipulate maximum of 5/6 people per punt.
  • Is there a time limit or can I extend my booking?
    Self-hire punts are typically rented by the hour, with charges applied pro-rata every 15 minutes. If you wish to extend your time on the river, you can do so, subject to availability.
  • What are your opening hours?
    Granta Moorings operates from 9:30 AM to 9:00 PM during the summer months. Opening times vary depending on season and special events. Online booking is available 24/7
  • Are you open every month of the year?
    Yes, Granta Moorings is open all seasons, with times varying based on seasonal conditions and special events. Extra thick blankets are provided off-season on guided tours. Dress for the season!
  • What are the key sights on the route?
    The College Route: The Bridge of Sighs, Kings Chapel and EIGHT Riverside Colleges. Grantchester Route: Meadows and Cows (over the rollers)
  • Where are you located?
    Granta Moorings is adjacent to Darwin College, 5 minutes walk from Queens Green coach drop off, 10 minutes from Kings College and 25 minute scenic walk (10 minute taxi) from Cambridge Train Station.

  • Where can I park?
    Granta Moorings has adjacent meter parking. The nearest public car park is Lammas Land, a 5 minute walk. Park and Ride Bus (Trumpington) is probably the best option if visiting for the day. Jump off at the Botanic Gardens, just a 10 minute walk from the river. Blue Badge parking is adjacent to our entrance.
  • Is the location wheelchair accessible?
    Yes, Granta Moorings provides an easy access ramp down onto the river to accommodate wheelchair users. We recommend getting in touch beforehand to discuss specific requirements and ensure a comfortable experience. Blue Badge parking is adjacent to our entrance.
  • Is there an age limit? Can I bring my baby or children?
    Children are very welcome! You can also store your buggy with us while on the river (remember to take the kid). We provide buoyancy aids in all sizes.
  • Can I bring my dog?
    Yes definitely – well behaved hounds are welcome on self rental and private tours 🐾
  • Can I bring alcohol on board?
    Yes, you are welcome to bring your own drinks on board. Chilled Prosecco, Beer, Champagne and Pimm’s is also available to take on board from the adjacent riverside bar. Hot Mulled Wine & Cider is available during the chilly off season months.
  • Can you help us arrange a special occasion?
    Granta Moorings are a selection of local businesses offering delicious food and drink perfect for riverside picnics or onboard dining. From hampers to BBQs and riverside drinks, it’s easy to create a relaxed, memorable outing ideal for everything from summer dates to group events.  Please contact us for more details to see how we can help!
  • Can I punt in the evening?
    Yes, during the summer months, Granta Moorings is open until 9:00 PM, allowing for evening punting sessions. It’s a delightful way to experience the River Cam as the sun sets.
  • What should I wear or bring?
    For a comfortable punting experience, it’s advisable to wear weather-appropriate clothing and flat shoes. On sunny days, consider bringing sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Granta Moorings provides blankets and umbrellas as standard, ensuring comfort in varying weather conditions.
  • When to go punting in Cambridge?
    The best time to go punting in Cambridge is during the spring and summer months when the weather is generally more pleasant. Autumn is lovely on the Cam, with vibrant colours. Extra thick blankets are also provided on guided punts. Dress for the season.
  • Is punting safe?
    Yes!  Granta Moorings provides guidance and safety instructions to ensure a pleasant experience on the water. We also offer free buoyancy aids.
  • Are you open in the winter months?
    Winter can be a bit nippy on the water. Extra thick blankets are provided, but do dress warm. Warm Mulled Wine or Cider to take onboard is a must.
